OUT OF CONTROL
Stéphane Vervaeke & Muesli Collective (Hannah De Corte, Louis Darcel & João Freitas)
From December 3, 2020 to February 13, 2021
EXHIBITION CONCEPT by Yuna Mathieu-Chovet
Stéphane Vervaeke creates worlds in ruins, immersive and post-apocalyptic landscapes made up of branches, debris, fragments of plaster, textile and porcelain. She takes great care of these broken items which will be cleaned, dried and sorted. While creating her pieces, the artist accepts an element of randomness as the response of objects. She is glad of not having to hide the presence of chaos, vulnerability and violence, which are part of our existence.
The Muesli collective (Hannah De Corte, Louis Darcel and João Freitas) creates works that react to their environment. Thus, Unruly paintings change their appearance depending on their exposure conditions, humidity or temperature. By deliberately limiting its ability to act on the physical appearance of the work, the collective offers another way for the artist, and therefore also for the viewer, to relate to the object of art, while underlying the importance of the context.
The Muesli collective and the artist Stéphane Vervaeke approach the research in plastic arts in a way that is partially outside the artist’s control zone, concomitant with a certain freedom, a form of self-determination granted by the artist to the work of art.
