UNHEIMLICH
Emma Hyvernat & Yuna Mathieu-Chovet
From March 13th to April 12th 2014

EXHIBITION CONCEPT by Yuna Mathieu-Chovet

Unheimlich will observe what’s beyond control, when familiar matters become weird. German expression developed by Sigmund Freud – Uncanny in english – describes how do familiar objects or situations become strange to us when unease creep into it, creating a cognitive dissonance.
Through Emma Hyvernat and Yuna Mathieu-Chovet’s works, this exhibition explores this “should stay hidden” meaning of common objects by showing them in an unusual way. We look at organic processes, motionless transformation of unknown frightening bodies. We look at moving shapes that we can’t recognize while we’re accustomed with. What’s curved become flat and what’s flat becomes curved, bearings are lost and we become our own stranger.
Our lack of understanding of the world lies in the fact that the intrinsic being of the world is the change itself. But we only know stages of it and we may be scared to discover a new one that we never experienced. In the end, what’s odd could be the best access to ordinary life.
